About Hardin Ridge Nature Preserve

Hardin Ridge Nature Preserve, located in Scott County, Tennessee, is a 740-acre protected area featuring dramatic sandstone cliffs carved by the New River and its tributaries. The preserve's geography includes rugged ridges and steep valleys, with elevations reaching up to approximately 3,000 feet, offering scenic overlooks of the surrounding mountains and river corridor. The preserve supports a diverse variety of plant communities, including oak-hickory forests, mixed mesophytic woods, and rare rock outcrop habitats that harbor specialized flora such as rare ferns and wildflowers. The diverse fauna includes populations of migratory birds, black bears, white-tailed deer, and occasional sightings of river otters. Hardin Ridge was established to protect these unique geological features and biological resources while providing outdoor enthusiasts with access to hiking and nature study opportunities. The preserve boasts over 8 miles of well-maintained trails that traverse rocky ridges and valleys, granting hikers access to the preserve’s most scenic vistas, especially along cliffs overlooking the New River Gorge. In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy bird watching, photography, and wildlife observation. The area’s relatively remote location contributes to its quiet, natural atmosphere, making it an appealing destination for those looking to experience East Tennessee's natural beauty away from crowds. The history of the preserve ties closely to regional conservation efforts begun in the late 20th century to protect key natural landmarks and wildlife habitats along the New River corridor. Hardin Ridge Nature Preserve remains an important refuge for native species and a vital example of Tennessee’s Appalachian Plateau ecosystem.
